First tsunami waves hit Hawaii

HONOLULU: Tsunami waves started hitting Hawaii on Saturday after a powerful earthquake in Chile, but the first impact was limited, meteorologists said. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that the first seismic waves had hit the US Pacific state but it was still registering the size. Television footage did not show any immediate damage in major areas.
But the center warned that more tsuanmi waves could come within minutes or even hours later.
Hawaii had given evacuation orders to thousands of residents, sounding warning sirens for the first time in 16 years.
