1.5 million homes damaged in Chile quake: official

SANTIAGO: Some 1.5 million homes were damaged by the powerful earthquake that struck central Chile, Housing Minister Patricia Poblete said Saturday. The figure includes half a million homes "with severe damage" that will "probably not be able to be lived in again," Poblete told reporters.
The huge 8.8-magnitude earthquake that rocked Chile in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday left a trail of twisted buildings, destroyed bridges, and closed down the Santiago International Airport.
The city of Concepcion, some 440 kilometers (273 miles) southwest of Santiago, and its surrounding area was especially hard-hit.
