Four Turkish soldiers killed in Kurd rebel attack
| TUNCELI: Kurdish guerrillas attacked a military command post in eastern Turkey overnight, killing four soldiers and injuring at least seven others, security sources said on Saturday. Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) rebels armed with rifles launched the assault in the mountainous Tunceli province at around 11 pm (2000 GMT) on Friday, they said. The post's commander was among those killed and the injured were being treated at a local hospital. Heavy fog and rain were obstructing search operations for the militants. The PKK, whose rebels are mainly based in northern Iraq, took up arms against the Turkish state in 1984 in a separatist conflict which has killed more than 40,000 people. The conflict has eased since PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan was captured and jailed in 1999, but generally flares up as the weather warms up in the spring. |
